CHINESE MYTHOLOGY


GUAN YU is the god of military power, war and brotherhood. He is respected as an epitome of loyalty and righteousness. He is traditionally portrayed as a red-faced warrior with a long lush beard. He is a strong protective god who brings demons to heel.

ZHU RONG is the god of fire and the south. He is most famous for battling his own son Gong Gong, who was a water demon responsible for causing floods. He is depicted as a proud man clad in armor wielding a sword and riding on a large tiger. He is one of the gods that helped separate Heaven and Earth and set up universal order. He has a red face and he was big, tall and very smart.

MAZU is the goddess of sea. She protects fishermen and sailors. She did not cry when she was born, and thus her given name means "Silent Girl." She starts swimming relatively late at the age of 15, she soon becomes an excellent swimmer. She wears red garments while standing on the shore to guide fishing boats home, even in the most dangerous and harsh weather. She is also known as the queen of heaven.

LEI GONG is the god of sky. He carries a drum and mallet to produce thunder and a chisel to punish evildoers. He has blue-green skin, fangs, and rides in a chariot pulled by six boys. He's also very noisy. But he doesn't create thunder by roaring or growling. His ear-splitting bangs are made with a hammer and chisel.

YEN LO WANG is the god of death. He is also ruler of the 5th court of Feng-Du, the Chinese Hell. He is portrayed as a large man with a scowling red face, bulging eyes, and a long beard. He wears traditional robes and a judge's cap or a crown. He is not only the ruler but also the judge of the underworld and passes judgment on all the dead.

FEI LIAN is the god of wind. He is a winged dragon with the head of a sparrow, the horns of a bull, body and legs of a stag and the tail of a snake. He carries wind with him in a bag and stirs up trouble. He also appears in human form and in his human form he is known as Feng Bo.
