SAMPLE LESSON PLAN (READING)


Number of Learners: 30

Age of Learners: 16

Level of Learners: Intermediate

Estimated Duration of the Presentation: 25’

Skills: Reading, speaking, writing

Materials: Handouts, pictures

Objectives:
To improve learners’ reading skill in pointing out main idea.
To identify the specific points of information.
To improve students’ reading skill for specific information.
To make the learners be able to skim and scan the reading passage.

Performance Objectives: By the end of the lesson, learners will have read for general understanding and comprehension, which will help them to improve their reading skills.

A. PRE-READING ACTIVITY


Aims:
To prepare the learners to the lesson.
To interest the learners into the topic.
To make learners be ready for the topic.
To activate the learners’ schemata.

What the teacher does: The teacher introduce the class the lesson’ topic by talking about daily life and pictures on the board and asks them some questions about pictures like;
- What do you see in these pictures?
- What do you think about the topic?

What the learners do: Learners answer the questions and comment on the pictures.

Timing: 5’

B. WHILE-READING ACTIVITIES


1) First Reading Activity

Aim: To make the learners skim the passage to get the main idea.

What the teacher does: The teacher gives reading passages and handouts to the learners. Firstly, she asks them to have a look at the table on the handouts. Then, he asks them to skim the passage quickly and match ideas with paragraphs.

What the learners do: The learners match ideas with paragraphs by skimming the passage quickly.

Skills:  Reading – Skimming for the main idea

Materials: Handouts

Timing: 5’

The Activity: Read the passage and match ideas with paragraphs

2) Second Reading Activity

Aim: To make the learners scan the passage to get the specific information.

What the teacher does: Firstly, the teacher asks them to have a look at the questions on the handouts. Then, he asks them to scan the passage quickly and answer the T/F questions.

What the learners do: The learners answer the T/F questions by scanning the passage quickly.

The Activity: Read the passage and mark the sentences True (T) or False (F)

3) Vocabulary  Activity

Aim: To make the learners read the passage and provide contextual guessing.

What the teacher does: The teacher asks the learners to read the passage and guess meaning of the words according to passage.

What the learners do: They read the passage rapidly and do the activity.

Skills: Reading for specific information and contextual guessing

The Activity: Match the following words with their definitions

1- Absence 
2- Mentally handicapped

C. POST READING ACTIVITY


Aim: To make learners discuss the topic.

What the teacher does: The teacher asks the learners to discuss the topic by talking about the changes in their city in groups of three and write a little paragraph about it.

What learners do: The learners discuss the topic each other and write a little paragraph.
