ROMAN MYTHOLOGY


MARS is the god of war. He is also an agricultural guardian. He represented military power as a way to secure peace, and was a father of the Roman people. He is outstanding and indestructible god with the appearance of a noble. He is the son of Juno and either Jupiter or a magical flower.

VENUS is the goddess of love and beauty. She embodies sex, beauty, enticement, seduction, and persuasive female charm among the community of immortal gods. She can give military victory, sexual success, good fortune and prosperity. She absorbs and tempers the male essence, uniting the opposites of male and female in mutual affection.

NEPTUNE is the god of the sea. He is likely associated with fresh water springs before the sea. He is the protector of fishermen and sailors. He is worshipped by the Romans also as a god of horses. He is one of only three Roman gods to whom it was appropriate to offer the sacrifice of bulls.

JUPITER is the king of the gods. He is also the god of sky and thunder. He is usually thought to have originated as a sky god and his identifying implement is the thunderbolt. He is the chief deity of Roman state religion throughout the Republican and Imperial eras. His primary sacred animal is the eagle and his sacred tree is the oak.

VULCANUS is the god of both beneficial and hindering fire. He is also the god of the fire of volcanoes. He is often depicted with a blacksmith's hammer and his foundry is in Etna Mountain. He makes the gods and heroes weapons with his helpers. He also makes the other gods thrones on Mount Olympus.

DIANA is the goddess of the hunt, the moon and birth. She is associated with wild animals and woodland, and has the power to talk to and control animals. She is known to be the virgin goddess of childbirth and women. She is one of the three maiden goddesses. She often wears a short tunic and hunting boots. Her sacred animals are the deer and the female bear.
